Bennie Westwood
Exciting night for baseball fans! Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Paul Skenes is taking the mound in the All-Star Game tonight, and his mustache is becoming a social media sensation. Even the Eat'n Park cookie has joined in the fun with its own ‘stache!
This brings to mind a lesser-known Pittsburgh hero from Trafford High, Benjamin F. Westwood Jr., Class of 1939. Known for his iconic mustache, his senior picture caption read, “Mustin’ touch his muzzy…It’s the real thing.”
Westwood was part of the Greatest Generation, serving aboard the USS New Kent during WWII, his ship participating in the initial invasion of Okinawa in April 1945. After the war, he worked at the Westinghouse Biosciences and Medical Systems, where his team developed a heart assist device that revolutionized cardiac surgery.

While it’s fun to spotlight the mustache guys sport today, it’s also enjoyable for us to recall how high school classmates of yesteryear also loved poking fun.
