Trafford's 50th Anniversary photos
We love receiving photos to share with you. These photographs were taken in August 1954 during Trafford's 50th Anniversary. On Facebook, we asked followers to add comments to a photo if they recognized the people in the photos or know anyone who worked on one of the floats. Who was playing the part of Christoper Columbus? Great costume!
Personally, I showed my father Vic Capets the photo of his brother's truck in the parade (Ed Capets Construction) and asked if he remembered the float. He replied, "Of course, I was driving the truck and my sister Vernie was sitting on top of the cab." He couldn't remember who was sitting in the passenger seat. My dad was 17 years old at the time. It brought back some great memories for a lot of my family who saw this picture over the past couple of weeks. His brother Ed constructed the small house on the back of the truck specifically for the anniversary parade.
The majority of the photos were taken at the corner of Brinton Ave and 1st Street. The photo with the train on top of the flatbed railcar appears to have been taken in front of the old "North Trafford Train Station" that was once located on present-day Stewart Station Drive. The Keystone Cops had their photo taken across the bridge at the 5th Street Apartments. Only a few of the photos had writing on the back, and we have added comments to each one.
Thank you, Michael & Sharon Dorich for donating these photographs to the Trafford Historical Society.

Interesting fact: In a 1947 court case, Chester C. Sayre was reported to have "a virtual monopoly in the highly specialized field of transporting or vanning horses for hire for race, hunt, and show purposes in Allegheny County and most of western Pennsylvania."
