May Queen Flo Pogue
May Queen celebrations were a nostalgic part of Trafford High School history. The tradition of crowning the May Queen followed a long-time practice of celebrating springtime festivities.
In May 1950, Florence Pogue was crowned May Queen in the auditorium at Trafford High School. The previous year’s May Queen, Gloria Grande, Class of 1949, did the actual crowning. In the 1950 Queen’s court were Janie Drost and Wanda Lenart, the Senior class attendants; Joan Kromer and Peggy Gibbs, Junior class attendants; Mitzi Tarbuck and Janet Matulia, Sophomore attendants. It was customary to invite first graders into the festivities, including Pauline Del Rosso and Joan Anstis, flower girls; Gerald Lytle, crown bearer; and Robert Nigrini and Donna Zigarovich as the train bearers.
The selection process for the court came from the student votes. Florence Pogue was also voted in by her classmates during her sophomore year when she served as an attendant for the 1948 May Queen, Joann Peduzzi. In this court photo you will see Seniors Dorothy Noll and Joan Jones, Juniors Eleanor Uhrrecht and Gloria Grande, Sophomores Betty Zigarovich and Florence Pogue, Freshmen Barbara Holsinger and Patty Haines. Please let us know if you can identify the first graders in the 1948 May Queen photograph.
