Jenets 416 Cavitt Ave

The building located at 416 Cavitt Ave was not always in its present location. When first constructed about 1910, Andrew M. Taubler (1866-1936) and his wife Eximena Taubler (1872-1957) built a frame dwelling at the rear of lot 416 on Cavitt Avenue as illustrated in this 1915 G.M. Hopkins map.

In May 1915, Italian immigrants Louis Jenets (1894-1967) and Doris Schopp (1899-1981) were married in Saint Regis Church. The couple purchased the Taubler property and assumed two mortgages, then had the building moved forward to be placed flush alongside 414 & 412 Cavitt Ave at the front of the lot. This move made it possible for customers to walk off the sidewalk and directly into the Jenets shoe repair business. Louis operated as a cobbler at this location until he died in 1967.

When Vic & Kathy Capets purchased the property in 1979 from Doris Jenets, the building to the right of it (414 Cavitt Ave) was in disrepair and had to be razed. The one photograph here shows my father Vic (2nd from the left) standing in front of the property where the top floor was being removed. The interior doors of the building were being used as a barricade to prevent debris from falling onto the street. 416 Cavitt is listed as one of Trafford’s oldest buildings for the Trafford Historical Society Map Project Westmoreland 250.
