Marsh & Yocum
One of the oldest buildings in Trafford, located at 512 Cavitt Ave, was built by John O. Blackburn in 1903. This recently acquired photo shows the storefront when it was operated by Marsh & Yocum Grocery circa 1905. Many will recall this as the location of the former DiRinaldo’s Shoe Repair on Cavitt. We have found very little information on P.J. Marsh or Yocum. Handwriting on the back of the photo reads "Store in Trafford City Coda on Porch."
The grocery store was operated by Marsh & Yocum from 1904-1905, and then only by Marsh from 1905-1906. A separate photo of the building is shown here taken in 1919 when it was operated by the P.H. Butler grocery chain. It reveals advertisements painted on the wood clapboards that have faded over time. Possibly advertisements for products inside, or one of the former business tenants.
This building will be included in our list (currently under construction) of the 250 oldest buildings that still exist in Trafford as we commemorate the 250th Anniversary of Westmoreland County.
