Andrew Voynick Jr - WWII

Trafford veteran Corporal Andrew Voynick Jr was photographed in the Marshall Islands (Kwajalein Atoll) on February 15, 1944, along with PFC Elmer Sumney of Hendersonville, NC. Two weeks earlier, the US Army and Marines landed on this island during the Battle of Kwajalein, part of the Pacific campaign during World War II.

This photograph shows the men cleaning field kitchen equipment, and for anyone who served in the military, you may find it somewhat humorous that the photo was labeled "Recreation" by the US Army Strategic Air Force Public Relations.

Andrew Voynick Jr served for 2 years overseas, and his older brother John of Trafford also served for 2 years in the European Theatre. John was awarded the Bronze Star during his time with the 93rd Armored Field Artillery. While both men were deployed during the war, their youngest brother Albert (Trafford High Class 1943) passed away at the age of 19 from cancer. Albert was working for the Westinghouse Air Brake as a laborer at the time of his passing.

John returned from the war in October 1945 and Andrew returned in December 1945. Both men were married in 1946, John marrying Kathleen Kron and Andrew marrying Betty Goodlin.
