MODERN FOUNDRYMAN "GOES HOLLYWOOD."
The caption of this Westinghouse photo taken on July 12, 1947. The operator was John E. Raspotnik (1907-1977), a former employee of the Trafford Foundry. The back of the photo reads:
Riding his moving machine in the beat style of a Hollywood cameraman, John Raspotnik pulls the control stick to hurl a column of molding sand into a large flask at the Trafford foundry of the Westinghouse Electric Corporation. The machine, aptly-named “sand-slinger,” is one of the latest mechanical devices installed in this "foundry of tomorrow" as part of complete modernization program. Whereas workers formerly had to shovel sand by hand, the "sand-slinger" guided by its air-borne operator delivers sand from an overhead storage bin and "rams" it into the mold at a rate of 1,000 pounds a minute. The sand feeds down through an 8 inch pipe and is hurled out of the machine by the centrifugal force of a 40 horsepower motor. (Photo colorized).
